I have recently been having many problems with a computer
I purchased from compaq with getting an intenet
connection and recieved messages that files were missing.
I tried to reinstall windows xp thinking that it would
solve the problems. The reinstall worked, but before I
can log on I get a message that I must activate it before
I can use the computer. I can't do this because my
computer is not directly connected to the internedt and I
have to install my router software before I can connect.
Is there any way to bypass this or to activate it from a
different computer?

The telephone number is dependent on the Regional Settings used when XP is
installed. When you are prompted to activate select the option to Active by
telephone. A window should open which has the phone number - usually toll
free - and the process is generally automated. You will be required to enter
a long string of numbers and will have a long string of number given back to
insert in a number of boxes. Once done activation is compete and you should
move into Windows.
You can also try booting into Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing F8 while the
computer is restarted. An Advanced menu should appear and you can select the
option to Start in Safe Mode. From the Safe Mode Desktop you can select
Start->Activate or at Start->Run type oobe/msoobe /a to bring up the
Activation wizard
