I need to format a CompactFlash device in FAT16 format with
a single reserved sector. Windows XP and Windows 2000 both
automatically format the MBR (PBR) with additional reserve
sectors automatically created. How can I specify that only
one reserved sector should be created?

Galen,

That application works for handhelds, and I've also been
able to find CompactFlash format applications that will
work with various USB CF card readers. However, I need an
application that will run on my Windows XP machine and
format a CF card connected through a PCMCIA adapter.

The DOS format command does not support specifying the
reserved sectors, and previous OSes defaulted to a single
reserved sector, but for some reason Windows XP thinks that
the format command should automatically reserve additional
sectors. The number of reserved sectors will vary based on
the size of the CF card for no apparent reason.

If someone knows of a general purpose format utility which
will allow me to specify the number of reserved sectors, or
a general purpose format utility which will default to a
single reserved sector, I would love to hear about it.
