NTVDM errors

I keep getting variations of the following error:
C:\Windows\System32\Svchost.exe. The NTVDM CPU has
encountered an illegal instruction (followed by the usual
undicypherable register addresses).

I searched the knowledgebase, but couldn't find anything
that made sense.
