I would update the drivers from HP's site.

One would think that using HP's site to access XP printer drivers would
be wise. However, the situation with older printers appears otherwise,
and I believe that there is some risk involved. HP apparently worked
with MS to develop XP drivers for some older printers, those with
drivers supplied with XP. This effort by HP was apparently limited to
providing minimal printer functionality to many older printers. Now, HP
has some printer drivers on their site that purport to include more of
the printer's original functionality. Supposedly. This newsgroup
reports so many problems with these enhanced drivers that I seriously
question the wisdom of ever using an XP driver acquired from HP's site.
Even some of the most popular, older printers, the LaserJet XL series,
simply will not work at all.

If you do try to install one of these HP drivers, I would follow Cari's
excellent, detailed, and non-intuitive procedure for de-installing the
Windows driver before trying to install the HP driver, and be prepared
to reverse the procedure.
