Fax connections

I am attempting to use fax and cannot seem to find very
basic answers to my questions.
Can someone tell me how to make the cable connections
from the back of my computer to the correct telephone
jacks? It's an emachine and has two jacks that are
available: "line," and "phone." I am using a DSL
connection and a Conexant Soft 56k modem. The fax
function has been properly installed, and I have reached
a point where I can send faxes, but not receive them. An
error message appears stating that there is a local
device error when I try to receive a fax. I have also
read that connecting a modem to a digital phone line will
damage the modem. Does this mean I cannot connect to DSL?
As far as being able to send faxes, it is too much of a
good thing; even after successfully sending a fax, the
program wants to send more faxes to the same number over
and over, even though I ask the program to disconnect and
please, please, do not try to send more faxes.
I'd appreciate any help with these basic questions about
fax functions.
