I have recently moved on to a Windows XP computer and have
immediately ran into troubles with XP's printer driver
layout. In Windows 98, you had the ability to assign the
Halftone ruling (Example: 85 line halftone)under
the "Graphics" tab of the printer driver. Windows XP
doesn't have the ability to set the ruling -- which can be
altered also with applications. I checked with Hewlett-
Packard (computer type I purchased) and their response
is: "XP let's the application set the ruling of
halftones." I HAVE ONLY APPLICATION THAT CONTROLS THE
RULING -- QuarkXPress. Programs like Word 97: you can't
control it; Photoshop: you can't control it; Adobe Acrobat
Reader: You can't change the Halftone setting (screen
ruling. YOU MUST HAVE THIS ABILITY. If the printer driver
had the "Halftoning" setting, you can change the setting
within any program. If this is a not so clever way of
making software programmers to "change their way" of
setting up programs and forcing customers to purchase "XP
Compatible" software -- then I need to know, so I either
get a "FIX" for this or I'll have to flush out XP and go
back to Windows 98. As I've told Hewlett Packard tech
support guy: "THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE."

HP Laserjet 5000. Not an "OLDER" printer. If this is
some "wonderful new way" of XP -- then out it goes! I
received a Hewlett Packard email tech response, they
said, "This is not available in the XP. This is all
controlled through the application. 98 is the only
operating system with the option to control half tone
through the driver." Well, the only program I have that
"controls" through the program I have is QuarkXPress 5.
I can find nothing on HP's support database. ALL I WANT
from HP, Microsoft is "is this the way it is in XP? If so,
then goodbye XP.

I thought that I'd better explain: I have also tested with
a Laserjet 4m Plus printer. The point is, this is a
Windows XP-created situation -- not a wrong driver issue.
Windows XP designed this situation; not to have
the "Halftoning" option under the "Graphics" tab. I cannot
believe that this is a Bill Gates brillian idea. In other
words, I have to imagine that there's something wrong with
the install of XP on my computer -- else there'd be a lot
of people screaming there heads off!
