I have a HP PSC 500 printer. After installing Windows XP,
every time I log on, get new hardware detected message. I
have installed updated printer drivers. What else do I
need to do to not get this error message?

The usual solution to this is to let the New Hardware Wizard complete it's
'thing'. Once it's installed and you have two printers, uninstall both
using the FAQ below, and then reboot the PC. Follow the reinstall procedure
and you should just get a single printer installed.

There are three separate steps and all three must be complete for XP to
'see' the new drivers.

Disconnect the printer.

Go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and uninstall any printer
software.

Then go to Printers & Faxes and right click and delete your printer.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer. Go back to Printers & Faxes
in the Control Panel and from the toolbar, select File, Server Properties.

In the drivers tab, delete all the entries for the printer.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer.

Download a new set of drivers from the printer manufacturer's website

Follow the instructions at the printer manufacturer's website and only
connect the printer when the software tells you to do so.

Hi Will --

Windows XP supports the PSC-500 with a print and scan driver on the Windows
media. After follow Cari's steps to uninstall the driver, the driver that
came with Windows will be automatically installed. You can just use this
driver for your device.
