I have a Sony DPP-SV77 Digital Photo Printer (dye
sublimation). When I attempt tp install the printer
software, I get an error message that says that the
software is not authorized to use with XP and if I
continue with the install, I can do harm to my system
either immediately, or later on. I went to Sony and they
do have a fix. I downloaded that but when I attempt to
install, I get the same message. Should I do it if Sony
says it will work?

That is entirely your call. The message says it's not signed by Microsoft,
that's all. Some background: in order to get a signature, a printer
manufacturer submits the driver to MS, where it's virus-checked and some
basic tests are run and if it passes, it gets a signature. If that driver
gets modified ever after (such as from a virus, or posted on a malicious
website, containing a trojan), the signing warning alerts you to the fact
that this version of the driver never was tested by MS and hence we can't
take any responsibility for it.

Basically, it's your call: if you trust Sony, and trust that your ISP got
you to sony.com and not to some spoofed website (highly unlikely yet
possible), then by all means you can go ahead and install. The case where I
would positively NOT install the driver is if it's from some fishy website
operated by people I haven't heard of.
