View Full Version : Can't Install Fax Service

I bought an HP OmniBook laptop with XP Pro installed.
Big mistake. The machine and XP are great, but the
service and installation aren't. I initially did not
configure XP with the Fax Service. Now, I want to
install the Fax Service. The XP files are in CABs on the
C drive, which the Windows Components install
functionality can't access. Add/Configure Windows
Components tells me that I need fxscfgwz.dll, and
HP "support" tells me there is no way to get that dll.
Their suggestion is to "restore" the system, meaning to
wipe out everything currently on the C drive. If I had a
real version of XP, I would be able to reconfigure
Windows whenever I wanted by accessing the CD ROM,
without losing everything I've put on the system, which
is what Windows was designed to do, and is part of what
we all pay for. HP says they can't help, and the dll
must have been "corrupted" by some software I installed,
so it's all my fault, even though no file of that name is
on the C drive. NEVER buy HP products expecting
reasonable support, or to be treated like a human being.

Does anyone know where I can get fxscfgwz.dll, so I can
add the Fax Service to my configuration? I did a search
in the downloads area, and could not find it. Thanks!

Other users have reported difficulties with the install routine that seem to
arise from the installation files still being compressed and therefore not
recognized by the installation routine. The following seems to work:

If you do a search for the files that the Microsoft components install
wizard says are missing - fxsapi.dll and fxcfgwz.dll - you won't find them,
but you will find fxsapi.dl_ and fxcfgwz.dl_. These are apparently
compressed DLL files. Try looking for all the files starting with fx with a
..dl_ extension in the folder i386 and double click on them. You will get a
prompt for which file to use to open them. Click on BROWSE and select Win32
Cabinet Self-Extractor which is in the system folder. With any luck it will
uncompress them all and make them visible as .dll files.

The install wizard still may not find these files. If so, then you must
manually direct the installation routine to the I 386 folder that contains
these now extracted files.
