After converting from ME to XP, I've never gotten my HP
printers to print without using a workaround, even though
I downloaded new drivers from HP. And now my DJ 720c only
prints black instead of color. I've had it with XP and
print problems. Has anyone tried or considered moving from
XP to 2000, or other Windows version? What were the
results? (I have a Dell Dimension, a LaserJet and
DeskJet/OfficeJet printers).

You cannot downgrade from XP to 2000 without formatting your hard drive.

Have you tried a total uninstall and reinstall of the printer? The problem
was probably caused by keeping the printer connected to the PC during the
upgrade from ME to XP...

There are three separate steps and all three must be complete for XP to
'see' the new drivers.

Disconnect the printer.

Go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and uninstall any printer
software.

Then go to Printers & Faxes and right click and delete your printer.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer. Go back to Printers & Faxes
in the Control Panel and from the toolbar, select File, Server Properties.

In the drivers tab, delete all the entries for the printer.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer.

Download a new set of drivers from the printer manufacturer's website

Follow the instructions at the printer manufacturer's website and only
connect the printer when the software tells you to do so.
