Try a total uninstall then a reinstall using the following method:
There are three separate steps and all three must be complete for XP to
'see' the new drivers.
Disconnect the printer.
Go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs and uninstall any printer
software.
Then go to Printers & Faxes and right click and delete your printer.
Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer. Go back to Printers & Faxes
in the Control Panel and from the toolbar, select File, Server Properties.
In the drivers tab, delete all the entries for the printer.
Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer.

Hi Cari. This did not work. I tried and tried before I posted, and
tried and tried after you posted the fix. I have checked the
parrallel port, I have checked the cab driver file, did all kinds of
things - apparently there is still more at the HP website I can
check - seems to be pages and pages related to this printer. Maybe
I'm doing something obvious wrong. I can't figure out what though.
Doesn't seem like it should be this hard. This is a brand new
computer with XP, not an upgrade. If you have any more ideas I'd be
grateful.
