View Full Version : HP 722C - printing larger than 14 inches

I am looking for a way to print larger than 14 inches on a HP 722c
deskjet. The specific size of the paper is 8" x 18". I am running XP
and 98. I am trying to print a PDF from Acrobat (and In Design). The
obvious problem is that I cannot set the paper length to anything
above 14". However, I have tried (in 98 because XP's driver doesn't
support this feature) printing a banner, but for whatever reason only
11" of the page is printed from about 3.5" to 14.5". Is there any
known way how to override the 14" setting because I see no reason why
the printer wouldn't be able to physically print on something larger?
or Am I using the banner setting incorrectly and does anyone have tips
on how to improve?

Below is some more background information about why I need to perform
such a task:

I am a senior communication design major at Virginia Commonwealth
University. I am creating a self-promotional piece about me to be left
behind at job interviews. The publication is 24 8" x 3"pages, meaning
I could print 3 duplex spreads on one 11x17 (and the whole book minus
the cover could be printed on 2 tabloid). For the cover, I wanted to
use some sort of transparent or translucent stock with just type which
would look through to the front and back photos. Unfortunately, I have
been unable to find any 11x17 that would come close to what I am
looking for. Kinkos does not copy onto 11x17 transparencies anymore,
Xpedx did not have any paper that a) would work on an ink jet and b)
was larger than letter. I ended up purchasing a large sheet of mylar
from an art supplies store. I sent it through my epson 1280 and the
ink would not take to the paper, the printing was very smudged and
just had an overall terrible quality. I then tried sending it through
my HP 722c, and the ink actually took to the paper (however there is a
drying time involved). Now I face the 14" problem. Because the cover
is a spread, I could opt to just print the front on one sheet and the
back on another sheet but because the rest of the book was printed on
11x17, and I intend to saddle stitch the whole thing, I don't know how
to re-attach the front cover to the back cover. A piece of tape would
work, but that would look fairly bad, and craft is important to this
piece.

Thanks.

In NT/2K/XP, custom paper sizes are hidden. Go to
Start/Settings/Printers. From the File menu, pick Server Properties. From
there, you can create new forms of any size you want. Whether or not the
printer driver will accept it or work right is another matter.

I fell asleep halfway through this prodigiously boring
epistle, but I have a few words of advice. If you want
something to leave behind at job interviews, don't kill
yourself. About half of the prospective employers you
will impose this work of self-promotion on will just
****-can it as soon as you're out the door. Another 40%
or so will get a good laugh out of it before ****-canning
it, and the last 10% will be impressed. Unfortunately,
you don't want to work for anyone who would be impressed
by something as superficial and shallow as the thing
you're going to such great trouble to produce.

Unfortunately the driver does not accept it. The new form cannot be
accessed from the print size drop down menu. Also, this is the exact error
I get when I try to make a custom paper size (win98) "Paper Size Error The
specified paper size in not valid. Valid widths are 3 to 8.5 in. (77 to 215
mm). Valid lengths are 3 to 14 in. (77 to 356mm)."

I'm going to try and print half of the page, then turn the paper around and
send it back through.

Thanks for the reply!
