Off topic but, in Excel-since using it in XP I notice a lot of
extraneous functions that I didn't call for, but it does anyway (error
checking, etc) how do I go back to a plain jane Excel; as in win98?

Probably best to seek assistance in the Excel newsgroup. Ensure to
state what versionof Excel you are using.

(My two bits: I really doubt that anything in Excel would be changed as
a result of operating system change...check you Excel defaults or
add-ins which may be different than you had set or installed with 98)

Sounds like you have installed Office or Excel 2002 which is the first version
to have the error-checking.

You can disable error-checking in Tools>Options>Error Checking.

You can disable "smart tags" by going to Tools>AutoCorrect Options>Smart Tags
and unchecking the two checkboxes you see there.

To get back to a plain-jane Excel without these features, I would suggest you
look for a copy of Excel 97 on Ebay. Purchase this with a licence and remove
the 2002 version and install the 97 version.
