The usual culprit for problems (such as this) with the Print Spooler is a
defective printer driver.
Make sure you have Windows XP versions of the drivers for your printer -
Windows NT, 95, 98 etc. and some Windows 2000 printer drivers will cause
grief with Windows XP. Most printer manufacturers have updated drivers for
many of their printer models on their web sites available for download.
Delete the printer(s).
Open the Printers and Faxes folder, click File, Server Properties and select
the Drivers tab. Use the Remove button to delete the printer drivers.
Disconnect the physical print devices (Parallel or USB) and restart the
computer
Follow the printer manufacturer's installation instructions and only connect
the printer to your computer when so instructed.

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.

Bruce - I have XP drivers for both of my printers. They
have been working fine for many months. I agree it could
be a corrupt driver, and I will try this. Thanks.
Is there an equivelant of W98's System File Checker in XP
(Just in case its a system error) ?
Roger - I have never had an error message, other than
being told, when I want to print, that I need to install
a printer. There has never been an indication that
anything has gone wrong, not even in Event Viewer.

Yes, its sfc.exe, usually found in c:\windows\system32.
Open a command prompt and key sfc.
