View Full Version : CAN'T SEARCH PAST 30 DAYS

John P.

It isn't bad enough XP support index doesn't work but
then when you try to search these messages, for help, you
can't search back more than 30 days no matter what the
dates you enter!!!

Is there a trick to it or is search broken too???!!!

The Microsoft web interface is the *worst* possible way to read
newsgroups. Use a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which you
already have.

To search old messages use Google
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search

>Thanks Ken, but.... I can't get Google to work at all. All
I get is "Your search -
group:microsoft.public.windowsxp.basic insubject:help - did
not match any messages posted between Mar 6, 2003 and
today." Message is the same no matter what search term or
date combo I use! Outlook Express will only give me the
last 3 days of headers or about 1200 in number when there
should be 10s of 1000s. This is ridiculous! I spent hours
earlier today searching Dell's & MS's databases to find out
why the index has disappeared from "help & support" with no
results. Now I've just wasted a few more hours trying to
get help here! Someone else posted the exact same question
on 8/30 and got no replies. I'm not optimistic. This really
sucks.

For what it's worth..... To see what would happen, I just
deleted all the headers I had (in outlook) and when I
tried to re-download them all I get now is one message,
mine! I just can't figure this thing out.

Just popping in here for a second, John, but when you deleted all the
posts did you also click the Reset button. That clears everything out
and lets you d/l all the messages that your server has for this group.
If you just clicked Delete, your computer things you just want new
messages. Using '98SE here, but XP should be similar.

Ok. I just entered a Google search, at http://www.google.com/groups in the
ADVANCED SEARCH FORM.

Here are my search conditions:
In the "Find messages" field group, I selected "with the exact phrase", and
plugged in the word "help".
In the left-hand list box I chose 100 messages, in the right-hand list box I
chose "by date"
In the "Newsgroup" field i entered the text
"microsoft.public.windowsxp.basics" (notice the word "basics" (which is the
name of the newsgroup, not "basic").
I left the "Subject" field blank/.
I left the "Author" field blank.
I left the "Message ID" field blank.
In the "Language" field I chose "Any language".
In the "Message Dates" field, I chose "Return messages posted ANYTIME".
In the "SafeSearch" field I chose "No filtering".

I then clicked on "Google Search" and got back 100 of approximately 57,300
articles from "Groups". I not only got that, I got 305,000,000 results from
"Web", 850,000 results from "Images", 4,380,000 results from "Directory",
and 91,500 results from "News"

Then I repeated the search, this time using your criteria, and got back 100
of 1,800 articles under "Groups".

This leads me to wonder: "Did you REALLY use Google to search your
newsgroup?"

As to your original question concerning Outlook Express: When you execute a
search using Outlook Express, Outlook Express only looks in the headers or
messages you have already downloaded. It does NOT look on the server to
fulfill your search conditions. If you have deleted all headers or messages
previous to the search, the Search will find no messages, or will only find
messages which meet your search conditions which were downloaded since you
deleted headers or messages.

John, I hope someone else has an idea for you but so far the only thing
I've seen that fixes the index in Help & Support is a reinstall of XP.
Missing text in the body of help is sometimes a theme problem but the index
would still appear.

Some things to check/try before a repairing the installation:
-Help and Support service is enabled?
-Run pchealth.inf. This file is in the Windows\INF folder. You will need
your XP installation CD or a copy of the i386 folder on the hard drive.
-If a registry cleaner was used after installing, try using the undo files.
pchealth.inf

If no luck, run a repair install (updates will have to be reapplied). Two
good reference sites with guides for repair install:
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

As Ken mentioned earlier in this thread, you are using the "worst" possible
way to navigate newsgroups, i.e., with a web interface ("Microsoft CDO for
Windows 2000"). You will be able to view threads, search for threads, and
respond to posts in a thread ever so much better if you switch to a good
newsgroup reader such as Outlook Express. You already have OE, so there is
nothing to buy.

Making the switch is easy. For instructions, go to Rick Rogers webpage:

http://users.westelcom.com/rogersr/setupoe.htm

You spelled the newsgroup name wrong. There's an "s" at the end.

I see from subsequent messages that you've since found out how to
do this correctly.
