Does anyone have any suggestions for a problem printing to
network attached printers using the TCP/IP port:
- I use the add printer wizard to define a printer using
the IP address of the printer. I know the IP address is
correct and the printer is working because I have another
PC with W2KPro that works fine with this setup.
- When I try and print a job to the printer, the print
icon appears in the tray and eventually a printer error
message displays (the job may partially print or not print
at all on the actual printer).
- When I open the print queue, the job appears with Error
in the status field. If I try to delete the job, it won't
delete - I have to manually stop/start the spool service
to clear the job.
I have tried three different models/makes of printer to
see if the problem was related to the driver, but the same
results occur. All work fine under W2K using the IP port.

The Standard TCP/IP port in both Windows 2000 and XP supports two protocols:

RAW (sometimes called Port 9100)
LPR

You may find that the target printers only support one these protocols or
you need additional configuration settings for the port. The default
protocol when you create a Standard TCP/IP port in Windows XP is RAW.

Check the Windows 2000 computer's printer port to see what protocol it is
configured for and make sure your XP printer's port is the same. If you are
using LPR, check the Queue Name and the setting for "LPR Byte count
enabled".

To check the Port settings:

Open the Printer's Properties page
Select the Ports tab - the port currently in use by that printer should be
selected automatically

click Configure Port.

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
