Word 97 spell check not working

I just got a new PC with Windows XP. I installed Word 97,
but the spell check feature does not work. If I go to
tools, options, spelling and grammer, the spelling
section is greyed out totally. I searched the data base,
and found Microsoft article 257643, but when I follow
that, when I get to Step 3 under Windows XP I do not
have "spelling" under Proofing Tools.

Can anyone help me fix this problem??
