Is it recommended to disable anti-virus software before
installing a piece of software?

Yes, as long as you trust the source of the file.

Greetings --
Most software manufacturers do recommend disabling anti-virus
software during the installation of their products; but I've never
done so, and I've never had an installation (or subsequent) problem
that could be traced to the activity of my anti-virus application.
