I have a new computer and I am trying to install my old
printer. The XP cd has a driver but I cannot get it to
work. At one time the computer recognised this new USB
device and loaded the correct driver, but it still failed
to print.

I am now trying to delete the printer but it does not
delete from the printers list. However if I look in
Device Manager I have no printer. I assume that I need
to go into the registry but I dod not know what to look
for or delete.

The printer will work back on the old comouter, and I
have changed the USB cable and used it on the old
computer.

If I try and install the printer from another USB port I
am told that in is an unknown device.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Printers do not usually show up at all in Device Manager. If it is not
deleting from the Printers & Faxes section in the Control Panel, it may mean
your print spooler is not working correctly.

From the command prompt, type

net start spooler

Now disconnect the printer physically from the PC. Go back in the Printers
& Faxes and if the printer is showing up, right click it and select Delete.
From Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, uninstall any HP software.

Reboot the PC. Do NOT reconnect the printer.

Go back to the Control Panel, and click on Printers & Faxes. From the
toolbar, select File, Server Properties and look in the Drivers tab. If
there are any drivers showing for the Printer, highlight them and select
Remove.

Reboot the PC. Install the software and only connect the printer when the
software tells you to do so.
