We have a HP 4100 printer which had been connected to a
Windows 98se computer and several people use that
printer. The 98se computer was just replaced with a
Windows XP Pro computer. When we try to reconnect the
other people to the printer, we have no trouble connecting
XP and 2000 computers, but our Windows 98 computers
cannot "see" the printer.

When we look in Network Neighborhood the new XP computer
is there, but no printer, even though the printer is set
up as shared. The printer setup utility cannot find the
printer either. Any ideas how the 98 computers can use
the printer? Thanks in advance.

For the Windows 98 computer to "see" the printer, the printer's share name
must be less than 12 characters long and must not have any special
characters or embedded spaces.

By default, the Share Name is the same as the Printer Name and XP tends to
default to fairly long names with embedded spaces (e.g. HP LaserJet 4100 PCL
6).

The next thing will be to make sure you have the Windows 98 version of the
printer driver installed on the XP computer for automatic download to the
Windows 98 computer. You should be able to do that via the Printer's
Properties, Sharing page.

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
