View Full Version : Fax go automatically

I am attempting to set up the XP fax with an answering
machine on the phone line (wife in Real Estate, need to
do double duty.)
I can get faxes fine if it waits until the number of
rings set. But if I set the answering machine to go on
Toll Saver or 4 rings, then the A/M takes precedence. Is
there a toggle I am missing in the Fax properties that
says "hey, if you recognize this as a fax, go into
action, otherwise go to the A/M".
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

You will need an external device which will answer all calls and
send the call to the right place according to type. If the
fax/modem answers the call, it cuts off the line to the answering
machine. If the answering machine answers, there are no more rings
for the fax/modem to respond to. No telephone device can determine
the type of call until it is answered. The stand alone fax machines
eavesdrop on the call answered by the answering machine to listen
for the CNG tone. If detected, the fax machine cuts in to take over
the call. If not detected, the fax machine lets the answering
machine take a message or lets the person who answered continue the
conversation. Some communications software has the capability of
recording an incoming message or receiving a fax with a compatible
modem. They may or may not work with Windows XP. Using the
computer as an answering machine gobbles up hard drive space.

Thanks. I now remember that one needed a "splitter"
before for phone vs. fax. Had hoped the software in XP
would handle it. I'm off to the store!
