Crash and Burn
December 5th 03, 08:56 PM
Hi, I have two computers running XP, both used to inform me when there were
windosw updates ready for install. Now only one does this. On the other, if
I go to SYSTEM PROPOERTIES:AUTOMATIC UPDATE all the text is greyed out, anf
the title of the text says "The Windows Update Service is Unavailable.

Any ideas how to make the service available again??

In addition to the information on Kelly's page, click Start, Run and enter
SERVICES.MSC Locate the Automatic Update service and double click it.
Make sure its set to Automatic and Started.

Then I would recommend updating your Antivirus software and doing a complete
system scan from Safe Mode.

Wow, impressive service, two responses in 11 minutes. The service had been
disabled, not sure why or how!

Anti Virus (AVG PRO) and Zone Alarm both upto date, thanks for the hint tho!

Again thanks. Problem now solved
