View Full Version : Can't Install Norton AV with Win XP

A friends computer has been giving him problems.
I'm trying to install Norton Anti-Virus 2002, but
can't. The message I get is it can't be installed because
NAV is already on the computer and to remove NAV
before it can be reinstalled. But, NAV is not listed in
the Remove/Add programs list.
The hard drive doesn't have a virus. I later scanned it
using the latest free version of AVG.
Anyone know how to force an install of NAV?
The computer is a Comapq 1.8 GHZ with 512 MB of RAM.
The NAV 2002 CD came with the computer.

Hi Steve
If the NAV install program says that NAV is already installed, then you =
have to take that as fact. Only Peter Norton knows how to install his =
own products <VBG>. Personally I wouldn't force an install of any =
Norton product.
Stick with AVG - it is free and won't let you down.

Go to the Symantec site and search for 'symclean.exe'. This will remove all
traces and allow for a fresh install.

Thanks. I'll it and a related program Symantec has.
Rnav2003.exe is a utility that helps you uninstall program files and
registry entries that were installed by NAV 5.0/2000/2001/2002/2003.
Only use Rnav2003.exe when you cannot uninstall NAV through Add/Remove
Programs.

Cosidering AVG rates as one of the lowest quality Anti
Virus programs at numerous independent testers that's
quite brilliant advice Will. Norton Anti Virus is one of
the best products on the market today. While many other
Symantec products are in fact poor quality I will concede
that not all of their products rate quite so high. As for
the uninstall of Norton I recommend going>start\run and
type in regedit and then click edit\find and type in
Norton and then click find. Just remember that editing the
registry is usually the last resort but the most effective
and you must be sure that you only delete what you want.
Now if you see a Norton file on the left then right click
to highlight it and the click delete. Now click edit and
then find next. You may have to do this for several times
until you get a window telling you that it is done
searching the registry. You can also delete any Norton
entries in the right pane in similiar fashion. Good luck.

AVG has never let me down - catching any 'nasties' before they hit the =
HD. Any Norton product has the habit of screwing up a system without =
too much trouble. AVG is free, with free updates - NAV costs, what - a =
system re-install if you're unlucky.
To uninstall any Norton product 'completely' needs a manual editing of =
the Registry. Perhaps it is about time Peter Norton 'devised' a proper =
uninstall program for his products.
