missing taskbar icons

my task bar icons on the right hand side of windows xp
desktop sometimes appear about once a month or if i have
installed a new program ect.
I am missing volume control and some other usefull icons
about 7 altogether, i have tryed all the obvious fixes
with hide inactive icons but still they dont appear any
ideas
