Now that I have upgrade from Me to XP, I can't get my
printer installed. It's a Deskjet 990cse. I downloaded the
new drivers from the HP website; however, when I try to
install, it says "cannot locate printer". It's like it
can't read that serial port (LPT1:).

Did you have the printer connected when you upgraded... if so you first need
to get rid of anything left from the ME O/S that could be causing a
conflict.
Disconnect any software remaining for the printer in Add/Remove
Programs..... then click on Printers & Faxes in the Control Panel..... If
the printer shows up, right click it and select Uninstall.
Then from the Toolbar, select File, Server Properties.... look in the
Drivers tab and highlight and remove any remaining drivers for it.
Reboot the PC.
Install the software and connect the printer only when it tells you to do
so.
If you need another copy, it's at http://tinyurl.com/7scm
with instructions for installation at http://tinyurl.com/dpq7
