When I initially installed the Epson 1280, I must have made a mistake
such that the ink monitor was not working. The printer was working
great, but then the printer showed that one of the cartridges was
empty. To figure out which cartridge was empty, I tried to reinstall
the printer software. This messed up the printer, so I tried to
uninstall and reinstall it as follows:

1. Control Panel - Remove Epson Printer Software (selecting the
1280). This was successful per the windows messages.

2. Restarted the computer with the printer off and the intent to
follow the Epson instructions to the letter = Turn printer on after OS
is completely booted so that the Found New Hardware Wizard will pop -
up. Then I would cancel the wizard and install the software per the
Epson CD. Unfortunatly, windows recognizes this printer so that I
never see the found new hardware wizard. Windows says that it
installs the printer and it is listed in printers section, but I
cannot print anything. It is like the computer recognized the
printer, but it cannot talk to it.

Please help, my wife is a scrapbooker and is on my case to fix it -
but I don't want to wipe the system clean and reinstall everything. I
have tried System Restore (prior to the ink monitor fiasco) to no
avail.

I also have a HP Photosmart 1000 that is working properly.

Thanks for your help.

Remove the present printer driver. Disconnect the printer from the computer
(quit Windows and turn the power off the computer and printer before
removing or connecting the printer cable it is connected to a parallel
port).

Get the printer driver and status monitor from Epson's www site and install
according to the instructions.

Generally, install the drivers, then connect the printer. In any case,
follow the Epson instructions.

I tried this but it didn't work. For some reason, windows is not
completely removing the driver that was bundled with SP1 (USB Print
Driver). When the computer is completely booted up and I am logged
on, I turn on the printer and the windows driver is being used versus
the Epson driver. Is there somewhere else that I can remove the
driver from in addition to the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs? Is
ther someway that I can trick windows into thinking that this printer
does not exist so I could force the use and proper installation of the
Epson drivers?

Thanks.

Navigate to Printers and Faxes. If multiply-listed, delete every listing
except one. Next, select that listing of the printer, right click, select
properties Advanced Driver and select the Epson driver.

Also, I would try removing the USB cable and connecting the printer with a
parallel cable.

Let us know.

Thanks for your help.

I was unable to reinstall the printer in windows xp. I completed
removed all of the software, drivers that I could get my hands on...
but WinXP somehow still had a driver (that I couldn't find to remove)
that it wanted to use when I tried to reinstall the printer.
Unfortunately, the driver that XP forced me to use would not
communicate with the printer. I tried to update the driver with Epson
drivers, but that didn't work either (this fell in in-line with the
specific instructions that Epson provides).

Anyway, I broke down and wiped the system clean and reinstalled
everything (with lots of restore points - this time). The printer
works fine now and I know for sure that I installed properly (ink
monitor works).

I think that if this had happened soon enough after I installed the
printer (or if I would have created a set restore point), I might have
been able to restore the system to the point before I added the
printer.
