Hello Greg -

I am having the same problem. The problem occurs in both
Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Even if two computers (both
running XP) are on the same network using the same network
printer, the problem can happen on one machine and not on
the other.

At this point, I am guessing that it is a network issue.
I say this because on a machine that did not display the
printer icon, I added a local printer (even though there
was no actual physical printer), and when I tried to print
to the nonexistant local printer, the printer icon showed
up as expected in the the system tray.

I hope this additional information is helpful. If you
have an answer by now, I would very much appreciate it if
you could post it or email me.
