View Full Version : Setup of remote fax printer

I'm trying to setup a remote fax printer on a second XP
box to use the fax modem on the first. I dutifully follow
the instructions, but when I use \\machine1\fax to setup
the printer I'm prompted to supply the password for
account \\machine1\Guest. I have service pack 1 on both
machines and have tried with machine1's Guest account on
and off. I have tried keying a password and leaving blank,
but "Windows can not connect to the printer. Operation
could not be completed." is always the response. When the
fax was on a Windows 2000 box I was able to select a
different user and provide a password for the resource.
I'm logging on as an Administrator on both machines.
Any ideas?
Geoff

In fax console help under topic Using Remote Fax Resources
in XP is a discussion of how to setup a remote fax
printer. While unsuccessful with Windows XP, 2K has
allowed a remote fax printer to be setup as it allows you
to enter a username and password pair to establish a
connection.

Neither Win 2K Fax nor Win XP Fax can support sharing. Those instructions
are how to configure those programs as a client to a fax program that can
support sharing, such as SBS Server Fax.
