Can I send a fax being connected to the internet via a
DSL line? Can I even operate a modem?

Neither a DSL nor a cable "modem" has the necessary functionality to send
faxes unless you subscribe to a fax service. In that case, you actually send
the fax information to the service and they send the fax for you. The
service is not free.

You can install a fax/modem in your computer and use that together with
appropriate software, to send faxes.

Sending a fax by DSL requires one of two methods:

1. You obtain a DSL line filter suitable for connecting a standard voice
telephone to the DSL line, then connect an analog fax modem to the line
through the line filter.

2. You hire an Internet E-faxing service:

If you're dealing with a Cable modem and not DSL, only option 2, Internet
E-Faxing services, is available to you
