Does anyone know of a cheap or even free ad blocking
service that they would recommend.

Try freesurfer http://www.kolumbus.fi/eero.muhonen/FS/fs.htm However most
retail ad stoppers are quite inexpensive.

If you go to the Google search page, www.google.com, they offer a toolbar
now for Internet Explorer that includes ad/pop-up blocking. I am using it
now to try it and so far it seems to work quite well. It is customizable if
there are certain sites you wish to allow pop-ups from also.
