View Full Version : Computer reboots before and after installing XP

My husband's computer has been intermittently rebooting
for the past 2 weeks. He initially had Windows 2000
Professional on his IBM Intellistation E Pro. When I was
trying to backup files, the computer rebooted 10-12
times. I ran virus scan and virus cleanup for sobig and
blaster, but no viruses found. I checked to see if the
bios was current, then tried to reload that, but the
computer locked up and I couldn't reinstall the bios.I
had a computer expert reinstall bios, upgraded to Windows
XP Professional and the restarts continued. I finally had
someone wipe my computer clean on Friday, then reloaded
everything. Currently running PC-Cillin, Outlook, and one
Word document, still having intermittent reboots. My
computer guy checked the power supply (in the computer),
added another stick of RAM (now 256)and still having
problems. When the computer reboots, I can't find any
error message in the Event Viewer log.
Can anyone out there help me?

your system is clean, open Control Panel, open System, go to the Advanced
tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, remove the check from
Automatically Restart under System Failure and click ok. This will cause
the system to blue screen instead of reboot, the message on the blue screen
may give a clue as to the source of the issue.
Place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check
System Compatibility," the report it generates may point to problem hardware
or software on your system that may be the source of the issue.
Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and every peripheral connected tot he system. Do not use
Windows update for this, use the device manufacturer's web sites. If you
install updated drivers, ignore the message that the drivers have not been
signed by Microsoft, that is not the issue. What you describe is usually a
hardware issue. If you can't find updated drivers, check the manufacturer's
web sites to be sure your device is XP compatible or being supported by the
manufacturer in XP.

Have the hardware checked on this machine. The restarts could be due to any
number of reasons -hardware or software. I would put overheating or spotty
power supply towards the top of the list.
