First, they must have the same spreadsheet application and text application
installed on their system as you have installed on yours. If you are using
Excel and Word, there are viewers available that they can download from the
following site if they don't have the above installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.asp

Second, if they are using Outlook Express to receive e-mail their security
settings must be set to allow them to open attachments. If they are using
Outlook Express, they should open it, go to Tools, select Optons, go to the
Security tab and remove the check from the "Do not allow attachments to be
saved or opened...." option.

1. If they cannot open the attachment because Outlook
Express or Outlook has blocked opening unsafe file
attachments, the default setting on Outlook Express (or
Outlook)...
a. Open OE, Tools/Options....Security tab and uncheck
the 4th checkbox which sets the attachment block. Send
this info to your friends.
b. You now don't have that automatic protection from
viruses, so be very careful and keep your anti-virus running
and scanning in the background. Keep it up to date.

2. If the can open the attachments but can't read or use
them, they need the proper program to read those files. MS
WORD can open and read many file types if you use the
"file/open" command in WORD to select and open the file.
But you may need to install converters to read some types of
word-processor files.
a. MS Excel can open many spreadsheet files, but you may
need a converter for some.
b. All files have an extension that can be associated
with a particular program and if you select the file it will
open the proper application, if you have that program and
the association has been set.
A. Your friends must have the proper programs installed and
you should tell them in the body of your email telling them
what file you have attached and what program is needed to
use that file. This is just a nice courtesy.
B. MS has free viewers for WORD and EXCEL that you can
download for free. You can include a link to these viewers
in your email. If you burn a CD to send, you can copy the
viewer to the CD.
