How do I shut down windows xp to ms-dos? please help

You can't. There is no MS-DOS with XP. You can try using a DOS boot disk,
assuming it has the tools you need but there is no shut down and exit to DOS
in XP as there is no DOS in XP. XP does have a command prompt which is a
DOS emulator but aside from that what you want to do cannot be done. You
probably could install DOS, if you have it or can find it, on a separate
partition and dual boot but this would require third party software such as
Partition Magic, www.powerquest.com.

Not possible. There is no DOS in Windows XP. The only way to get
it is to boot to a diskette or dual-boot (and if your hard drive
is NTFS, you won't be able to see it unless you run special
software).
