How do I add/remove program icons from the notification area? I'm not
referring to the quick launch taskbar, rather those icons that appear next
to the clock. . .
Thanks!

I'm not referring to hiding something when it is inactive either, because I
don't want that goofy arrow that tells me I have inactive program icons in
my notification area.

These are installed by various applicatons you have running on your system.
You can check the options of the associated applications to prevent them
from running at startup. Sometimes you can reach those options simply by
right clicking the icon and choosing options if it's there.

It depend's on the program if you can do this. The writer of the program
decides to put the code in his/her application to have it minimize to the
tray. You remove them by either maximizing the program on your screen or
exiting out of the program. Some programs will minimize to the tray.

Greetings --
In most cases, one need only open the offending program and
deselect the option to "display icon in the system tray" or to "start
when Windows starts."
Failing that, you can use Start > Run > MSConfig to temporarily
turn off the automatic startup of these programs. MSConfig will also
show you where the commands starting these programs are originating,
so that you can permanently eliminate the source of your irritations.
Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the system registry, primarily
in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Tweak-UI "Taskbar and Start Menu", uncheck the "Show taskbar notification
icons", reboot - they'll be gone.

Hi Larry,
Check for an option to not having the icon load in the System Tray via the
program(s) in question.
Other options for removal:
Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.
