I have a fairly new Dell Dim 4550, 512 ram 60 g hd, window XP w/service
pack. A strange event is happening. I tried to start in safe mode & after
pressing f8 at Dell screen the message came up reading " keyboard failure "
and does not show any startup options and then windows starts ok however the
keyboard is completely dead. No lights or anything. I restart unit &
keyboard is fine. This has happened 3 times so something is wrong. The
keyboard has never been any problem except in this case

Hi Jim,

If the system is still in warranty call Dell and get a new keyboard.

Not necessarily. Most systems check the keyboard on power up. It (the
diagnostic) is looking for a false signal from the keyboard. You may be
simply hitting f8 too soon. On many systems the instructions are 'depress f8
AFTER you see screen X'.
