Will someone please give me an example or two of routine uses for .net?
It's a recommended Windows update for all of my computers, but I've
never understood it's purpose and have never installed it.
Am I denying myself some useful feature of Windows? Thanks..

Harold,
You are referring to the .NET Framework 1.1 download.
This is a add in for Windows that developers of applications will use.
We are beginning to see applications that use this already and more will do
so in the future.
Have a look at
http://www.microsoft.com/net/basics/
for "What is .NET ?"
