After receiving a new computer with Windows XP
Professional on it. I ran the setup software from its CD
for a brother HL 1440 printer. The printer appeared in the
printer folder. When I tried to print a test page it
failed. I uninstalled the driver from add remove programs.

After that I cannot add a printer. Clicking the add a
printer wizard says operation can not be completed.

Consulting Microsoft knowledgebase says the print spooler
needs to be started and/or set to automatic but neither of
these helps. What should I do?

What message appears on the screen when you use the command prompt and type

net start spooler

(and hit enter)

It would appear that the HL 1440 is a couple of years old. The CD that came
with it almost certainly does not have Windows XP drivers on it.
Unfortunately, many printer installation tools don't care what OS they are
installing on and install non-compliant drivers.

Visit http://solutions.brother.com/hl1400/download/drivers.html to get
Windows XP drivers.

See http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/AddNewFails.htm and
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm for some hints on
how to recover from your situation.

It's perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.
