After my husband uses the internet, logs off, and puts
computer on stanby and I log on, the screen goes black and
when the screen comes up there is a black corona around the
sound icon. Why is this.

It's impossible to tell. It sounds like an issue with your graphics card.
If your card is sharing memory with main system memory as opposed to a card
with its own memory, that might be the issue. It's possible you only need
to update the drivers for your graphics card from the card manufactuarer's
web site.

Those are two possibilities.

That happened to me until I dropped all the high resolution screensavers and wallpapers I was using
on may machine with the integrated graphics. Most of them were 3D images from web shots and it just
couldn't switch gears ( so to speak) fast enough.
You might want to try just switching to one of the stock screensavers and wallpapers that came with
your OS and see if that helps.
