If I have Outlook or other MS apps open when I do a
system shutdown, I get a message "Please close all
Microsoft applications before shutting down the system"
This is a pain and I never had to do it before I
installed XP. Is there any easy way to be able to have
apps automatically close when I shut down windows?

Instead of using shutdown, use Hibernate.
Go to Display in Control Panel, go to the Screen Saver tab, click Power, if
Hibernate is compatible with your setup, there should be a Hibernate tab, go
to that tab and make sure Enable Hibernation is selected.
With Hibernation enabled, when you go to Start, select turn off computer,
depress the shift key and the standby button will change to hibernate,
select it, the system will shut down and when it boots again, all your
applications will be open exactly as you left them.
