Windows XP Standby Problem

I recently purchased Windows XP for a system that I put
together. I have a problem returning from Standby.
Whenever I strike the power button to return from Standby
mode, I am sent to a screen that contains my desktop
background image, and a working mouse icon. However, I
have no access to right click menus, ctr alt del, the
start menu, or any other Windows functionality. The only
way out of this is a hard restart via the power button.

My system specs follow:

Microsoft Windows XP (with latest Service Pack)
WD 200 GB Hard Drive 8mb Cache 7200 RPM (x2)
Antec P4C800E Deluxe MB
Intel P4 3.0C 800 mhz FSB
Corsair XMS Ram PC3500 512MB (x2)
Soundblaster Audigy 2
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (256)

A number of standby problems can be resolved by reinstalling or
updating the video drivers.

My first reaction, though, is to wonder why you're using the power
button to return from standby rather than the mouse or keyboard.

Thank you kindly for your response. I have updated all of
my drivers for all of my macro components very recently
(video, audio, etc.).

With regard to the power button as apposed to the mouse/
keyboard, that's a setting under power management that's
configurable, this is just how I have it set (I plan on
fixing that as soon as I have the larger issue resolved).

I have, since initially posting this morning, found the
following link which I hope will solve my problem. Thank
you again for responding, and I will let you know how the
patch helps/ doesn't help me.

The 'Power Buttons' that you say you set up,
these refer to three buttons that you may/maynot have on your keyboard,
the 'Power Buttons' settings do NOT refer to the power button on the PC.
Note the 'Power Options' you speak of is plural (the 's' on the end),
you do not have two power buttons on your PC-box, do you!

Said three 'Power Buttons' on my keyboard are at right of FN-keys,
they have special markings on them (Power, standby/hibernate anotherone).

computer wakes from standby mode via the power button, as
opposed to the keyboard and/ or mouse.

Good to know. However, if you've lost standby, you may need to
reinstall those new video drivers. My standby function sometimes
vanishes after I've done a windows update.

Pardon me, indeed you did not use words 'Power Button(s)' , but is that not
the sub-heading in 'Power Management' where you made the settings.
