Is there a method to upgrade to XP Home from Me without
looking and having to reinstall program software?
Have purchased XP but do not wish to reinstall all
software on existing computer.
Thanks

Hello Duke,
Upgrading to Windows Xp Home Edition from Me is possible. All your programs
and files from Windows Me would be still there.
Note: That some programs won't work with Windows XP.

Yes you can do an overtop upgrade from Windows Me to XP. However you need to
be aware that not all programs will transfer from on OS to another. In some
cases you must completely uninstall an application before upgrading and then
reinstall it afterward. This is true for antivirus programs, third party
disk management apps like Norton System Works or GoBack etc and CD Burning
must also be uninstalled prior to upgrading. Other apps do not need to be
uninstalled before upgrading but you will need to reinstall them again
afterward. This seems to be true for Microsoft Office apps. Some apps might
not be compatible with XP. You will need to find update patches or versions
of these apps. For example Easy CD Creator 5 must be patched to 5.3xx in
order to run correctly on XP.
So there is no easy answer to your question but the bottom line is that you
should always run the Upgrade Advisor to do a compatibility check before
upgrading and heed what the report tells you. If it says a currently
installed program is incompatible you had best remove it before upgrading.
The Upgrade Advisor is available on all XPs CD or can be downloaded from
here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
More information on Upgrading can be found at Gary Woodruff's excellent
resource http://www.aumha.org/a/xpupgrad.htm

There are essentially two ways to install it--cleanly or as an
upgrade. If you install it cleanly, you lose everything: data,
applications, etc. If you upgrade a previous operating system,
you save everything; that's what "upgrade" means.
However, note that there are no guarantees. When taking a big
step like an operating system installation, unlikely as it may be
it's always possible that something can go wrong. For that
reason, you should be sure you have a backup of anything you
can't afford to lose.
