Backup utility XP Home

The Microsoft web site says that I need to install the
backup utility manually from the XP Home CD. The problem
is that HP never provided me with an XP CD because the OS
came pre-installed. Any ideas on how I can still get the
backup function? I'm thinking that since HP installed the
OS before shipping, the backup utility may be dormant
somewhere. Also, are vendors obligated to provide end-
users with the CD? I certainly think so, since I paid for
a licensed system. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thanks.

I don't believe you will find a vendor willing to give you the retail
version of XP for free. They install it because it's the cheap way to go, I
don't know what they actually pay Microsoft for XP but with systems selling
for less than $400 with XP installed you can bet they get a good deal.
You should have a recovery cd of some sort and you may want to try searching
it for this file Ntbackup.msi, it's what you need to install it. If that
don't work you may want to contact HP, they may have a way of providing it
to you as I found the following from a previous post here:

NOTE: The Backup utility is provided as a value added software
and is not a part of the Operating System. Microsoft
has included the Backup utility only with the retail
version of Windows XP. The OEM version of Windows XP
preinstalled in the Presario does not include it. To
install the Backup utility, you need to install SoftPaq
SP20077. To obtain the SoftPaq SP20077, please contact
HP Technical Support at 1-800-OK-COMPAQ (1-800-652-
6672).

You were given the URL to download ntbackup, which can be configured
to backup extra files in addition to the essentials. Another backup
that is frequently recommended (somewhat akin to the old scanreg) is
erunt.zip, a 575K freeware utility.

Thanks for the advice. I was not provided with a recovery
cd, only recovery files in a D partition. It's supposed to
contain what the recovery cd's did, but if my system
crashes, how do I even access the D partition? It doesn't
make sense. Nonetheless, I searched for the ntbackup file
and came up empty-handed. I appreciate your assistance,

You're supposed to create your own recovery CD from that partition.
