View Full Version : shutdown only after Office closed
gary

When I shut down and Office is open i get a
message "Please close all Microsoft Office applications
before shutting down the system"
This seems stupid and I never had to close apps with
earlier versions of Windows (I'm running XP w/Office XP).
Any inputs and/or ways to avoid this?

Actually, it's not stupid. Shutting your system down with applications
running can destroy your hard drive.
:
That said, it can be done as follows and note, and by the way, this
essentially closes open apps takes a snapshot of your system at shutdown so
that it will reopen in the same condition:
Instead of using shutdown, use Hibernate.
Go to Display in Control Panel, go to the Screen Saver tab, click Power, if
Hibernate is compatible with your setup, there should be a Hibernate tab, go
to that tab and make sure Enable Hibernation is selected.
With Hibernation enabled, when you go to Start, select turn off computer,
depress the shift key and the standby button will change to hibernate,
select it, the system will shut down and when it boots again, all your
applications will be open exactly as you left them.

Thanks for the help. By "stupid" I meant that in prior
versions of Windows and in XP for non-MS apps, Windows
shuts down the apps automatically, so it is hard for a
non-techie like me to understand why only MS apps will
not shut down. Again, thanks for the help.

Ah, I see. You're welcome.
Note, previous versions of Windows did not always shut down the applications
before closing though it might have appeared that way in some instances. It
was and is always best to close any open applications before shutting down.
The method I've given you requires a little time at shutdown for the
procedure to complete but it will accomplish what you wish to do.

I agree with Michael 100 % on this. My old IBM with '95 had this Hibernate
feature and it was a blessing in disguise. Also, I always learned from day
one that a true shutdown meant just that; all is closed.

Compared to some stuff out there back then, it was a gem. Still have mine
just in case... May be a bit dated but it wotks :)

Agreed. It was a marvelous machine for it's time. I did a little upgrading
of the memory, from 16MB to 32MB and replaced the soundcard since it was ISA
and I had upgraded the OS to Windows 95 which wasn't getting along with my
previous ISA soundcard.
I ultimately gave the machine to a needy family. She was a receptionist in
my Doctor's office at the time. She had two sons and was mentioning to me
how they were having trouble keeping up with some of the other kids in
school because most of them had computers. I gifted them with the whole
setup. I've always been a little sorry about giving up my old dot matrix
printer which I gave them in the package but I know it served them well.
I was moving on to a new setup at the time and I had vastly outgrown that
system but I admit, it had been a real workhorse for me and served me well.
