Friend wishes to upgrade from 98 to XP.
Windows 98 was preinstalled on his pc at purchase and he doesn't have the 98
CD's.
Q. - Will he be able to purchase and install XP upgrade software or will he
need to buy the full XP?
Thanks.

He can upgrade using the XP Upgrade version and he can even do a clean
install using the Upgrade version providing he does so from the Windows 98
Desktop. Pop the XP Upgrade CD into the drive and select Install->Upgrade
[recommended] to do the upgrade. Or select Install -> New install to do a
clean install. He just has to be careful not to setup a dual boot scenario
if doing the clean install unless he wants to do that.

I should add some additional comments to my last post. Have your friend
check his current Win 98 setup to see if there is a directory called \Win98
If so it might contain all the setup files for Windows 98. It is not unusual
to copy the \Win98 folder from the CD to the hard drive and then install
from there. If he has that folder it should contain a file called SETUP.EXE
as well as a lot of .CAB files he should burn this folder to a CD. He can
use it in the future to reinstall Windows 98. Before doing this he needs to
record the product key used to install Windows 98. he can do that by running
this little script file
http://www.webtree.ca/newlife/downloads/ProductKey.js Write down the number.
While he can not use this folder to satisfy the request for a qualifying
product if he ever needs to clean install XP again using the upgrade disk he
could reinstall Windows 98 then use the XP Upgrade disk to clean install as
I mentioned in the other post.
He might be better off purchasing a full version of XP but given the price
difference between an XP Upgrade and Full version he could certainly get by
with a work around especially if he isn't the type of person who constantly
wants to reinstall XP
