Printer/Modem Conflicts on USB ports

I am running Windows XP Home Edition. When printers are
attached to a USB port, the modem stops functioning. I
have tried four different printers from different
manufacturers with similar result. If I turn the printer
off to get online and then turn on the printer to print
from the internet, I am kicked offline. The modem is
otherwise working properly. It seems that Windows XP sees
the modem and the printer as the same device. I would
appreciate a solution.
