Hi,
Does anyone know how to find out whether my XP Home cd is
bootable?
The OS was already installed when I we bought it as an
OEM. WE have the cd and is licensed to us but if we
reformat our harddrive and reinstall XP Home, is it as
simple as putting the cd? Is there anything else we have
to do besides that? Does all XP boots from cd?
Thanks.

The XP Home cd is bootable. Typically systems that come with XP
preinstalled get a restore cd and not the actual XP home cd. Your vendor
should have a procedure for restoring your machine to like it was when you
brought it home.
If you want to see if yours is bootable, just go into your systems bios and
change the boot sequence to put the cd in from of the hard drive as a boot
device.

Greetings --
All legitimate retail WinXP (both Home & Pro) CDs are bootable.
Can't speak for the hundreds of different OEM versions out there.

Best way to find out is to test. Place the XP CD in the drive, boot the
system, look for a screen that says something similar to "If you wish to
boot from the CD press any key," if you see that, it's bootable. As others
have pointed out, you need to be sure your system is set to boot from the
CD-ROM, you need to check your system BIOS to be sure the CD-ROM drive is
first in line in the boot sequence. You enter the BIOS by pressing a key
specified on the first boot screen. It usually says something about, "To
enter setup, press" and then specifies a key. Doso, then naviagte to the
boot sequence.
Do your formatting from XP setup as follows:
Boot with the XP CD in the drive. When you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.
After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:
To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
In your case, press ENTER.
Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.
You will then be taken to a screen with two options.
To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.
This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.

Thanks to all who replied to my post, I really appreciate
it.
Michael, thank you so much for the detailed explanation.
I am most grateful, very kind of you to explain it so
well for I don't know much about computers. I am saving
your reply message into a file for future reference so it
will be my guide when I reformat my hard drive and
reinstall XP Home.
Thanks again.
