scanner won't work with WinXP

Recently up-graded to XP from 2000. Now when I try to
use the scanner on my HP PSC 500, I get a message on the
scanner that says "Cannot connect to PC. See customer
care guide. The printer and copier work fine. And
scanner worked O.K. with 2000. Any suggestions?
