i'm using windows xp pro. is there a way to use he
keyboard to minimize and maximize a window instead of
clicking on the top-right buttons?

Minimize to taskbar- ALT+SPACE BAR+N
Switch using ALT-TAB to goto that window

I use a freeware program named Winkey which has built-in
maximize\minimize commands for the active window of WK + arrow up or
arrow down.
