View Full Version : When I print to the fax printer, nothing happens

Chip Harris
September 25th 03, 10:55 PM
When I use the fax software that came along with XP Pro, it has
stopped working all of a sudden. I can print to my printer just fine.
When I have a document that want to fax, I choose the fax printer,
and it brings up the send fax wizard, I work my way through that, and
then nothing happens. The fax doen't go to the inbox or anything. No
error messages, either. It's like it just disappears into thin air.

I have tried deleting the fax printer and reinstalling it, and that
doesn't work either. I also cannot preview the fax. The fax wizard
gives me an error that says that the fax preview cannot be displayed.
I have faxed hunderds of times, and have never had a problem. I
haven't done an XP repair since I installed XP about a month ago. The
only thing that has changed is that I installed a scanner, but I did
send faxed yesterday of documents that I had scanned in using the new
scanner. Any tips would me much appreciated.

Thanks,
Chip Harris

Can you send from the Fax Console? What is the status of the Fax Printer in
the Fax Console?
I rather suspect your scanner software created the problem. What is the file
association for TIF files? Have you checked with your scanner manufacturer
to see what mischief they cause?

Faxinating! I have the EXACT same problem using XP Home
version 5.1 Build 2600 on a Sony VAIO PCV-RX650. After 6
months of flawless fax, all of a sudden I started to
get "The fax preview cannot be displayed" error message
when I hit the "Preview Fax..." button in the Send Fax
Wizard. (But I continue to be able to preview existing
faxes in the Inbox and Sent Items folders just fine.)
When I hit the Finish button, the Wizard closes and my
fax vanishes with no trace in the Fax Console Outbox or
Sent Items folder. I also removed and re-installed Fax
Service with the Add/Remove Windows Components and this
did not help. Nothing in the Knowledge Base about this
problem either.

Chip, if you decide to try the XP Repair, please let us
know if that fixes the problem.

To answer Russ's questions:

1. The Fax Printers Status in the Fax Console shows the
Local Fax Printer is Online.
2. The same problem occurs (no fax sent and preview
cannot be displayed error) when I try to send only a
cover letter (no document) from the Fax Console (using
File/Send a Fax...)
3. File types with TIF and TIFF extentions are still
registered to open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

Chip, when you double-click on an existing fax in your
Fax Console's Inbox or Sent Items Folder, does it still
open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer? Mine does.

I haven't tried to *receive* a fax since this started
happening. As a matter of fax, maybe I'll try that
tomorrow and let you know what happens.

Unlike Chip, my trigger event was not the scanner
installation (Canon MP F30) but I think instead it might
be related to a recent Kodak EasyShare software
installation. The next move in my fax finding mission is
to un-install EasyShare and see if that helps.

We could really use your help on this one, Russ. Please
let us know if you have any other ideas.

Thanks,
Ken Greene

Is your file association for TIF files:
"rundll32.exe <drive>:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscree n %1"
?

The only ohter documented cause of this problem that I've seen is firewall
software Trojan horse rules. The most common is one that ships with Norton
Internet Security. Details on that on are available here:

Thanks, Russ. Yes, that is the file association I show
for TIF.

As for the Netspy Trojan Horse Rule, I did have to
disable this default rule after I first installed Norton
Firewall in order to avoid those annoying Alert Tracker
error messages that say "Rule Default Block Netspy Trojan
Horse Matched." I don't think my fax problems started
when I installed Norton or disabled this default rule.

I did try to send a fax just now with the Norton firewall
disabled but the problem still occurs. You don't suppose
I have to uninstall the Firewall to completely rule it
out, do you?

Yes, I saw that one but it does not apply to me because
(1) it applies to XP SP1 and I am running XP ver 5.1
build 2600, and (2) I can preview faxes from the Fax
Console just fine (e.g., by double-clicking on a fax item
in the Sent Items folder.) The problem occurs only when I
try to preview from the Send Fax Wizard.

Are you suggesting I try to install this patch anyway?

I contacted Sony and they suggested a reformat/reinstall
of XP and all apps. Gee that was clever of them :-)

The symptom described in the Symantic bulletin is a false
security alert when the fax service is enabled. It does
not mention any kind of problem with using the fax
service itself. Are you aware of any symptoms other than
the false alert described in the Symantic bulletin?

I thought we ruled out the Trojan Horse rule as a
possible cause since the problem still happens with (a)
the Netspy rule disabled, or (b) the entire Norton
Firewall completely disabled. I asked you if you don't
suppose I have to uninstall Norton Firewall to completely
rule this one out, do you?

I have not applied SP1. But I had no problem with faxes
for the first 6 months, so I had no reason to think this
was an OS problem. I still think some other third-party
software corrupted something (in the registry perhaps?).
Are there any specific registry entries used by the Send
Fax Wizard that I can check?

I tried to see if the problem happens when booted in safe
mode but of course the fax service is not running then.
Can I boot in safe mode and then manually start the fax
service and then manually start other apps one at a time
until I find which one causes the problem?
