Have you tried just copying the program to the what used
to be called the root directory and then running the
program after you entered the DOS prompt (which you can
get to from Start, All Programs, Accessories)? That
might work. I don't know. I wrote a little editor when
I had nothing but MS DOS and it still works.

There is sometimes a "permissions" issue - some programs are trying to do
things which on XP can only be done with administrative privileges. You can
set a program's shortcut to "run with different credentials" so it prompts
you for a different login when you run it.
